Course Commentary

Oak Park is a hidden gem in the robust Chicagoland golf scene. Designed by Donald Ross, the dead flat and square property showcases Ross' routing genius by creating a fun and intricate test. The more I play Oak Park, the more I grow to appreciate Ross as an architect. The course underwent a restoration by Rick Jacobsen in 2006-2007. Jacobsen did many good things for the property but there is far too many artificial features given the property's flat nature.

Recently, the course has improved immensely under the watchful eye of superintendent Phil Cuffare who implemented a major tree management plan. This has opened up playing corridors, improved turf health and reintroduced strategy to the classic design. While this course is often overlooked in the golf rich Chicago area, it's definitely a course worth checking out if given the opportunity and in the area. - AJ
