The Rundown

Lake Merced neighbors Olympic Club and San Francisco Golf Club and was originally designed by Alister MacKenzie. The course underwent changes when the club was forced to give up some of its land for a highway expansion in the '60s. From that point on, Lake Merced has strayed away from it's MacKenzie lineage to it's current Rees Jones design today. The course is laid on a small but good rolling ground and possesses a number of interesting golf holes. The par 3 3rd, long par 4 7th and short par 4 16th stand out but the artificial mounding, long walks from green to tee and the deep fronting bunkers detract from what the course could be. I hope that someday Lake Merced looks back to it's history and get a restoration/renovation in the MacKenzie spirit.
