The Rundown

The Cal Club is just minutes from SFO and is one of the finest golf courses in San Francisco. It possesses a rich architectural history. After San Francisco Golf Club departed their original home, Cal Club took over the land and founded their club. The club found its current site and commissioned A.V. Macan to lay out the course. Macan's design was enhanced when Alister MacKenzie visited and added bunkers, making Cal Club one of the top courses in the country. Over the years, Cal Club fell victim to overplanting and a Robert Trent Jones Sr. redesign in the 1960s. In 2005, the club hired Kyle Phillips to lead a restoration and redesign of the golf course. Phillips reworked a few holes on the front nine while restoring the back nine to the post-MacKenzie golf course.

Cal Club's design, phenomenal conditioning and world-class hang make it one of the most enjoyable places to play golf in the world. The routing has a little repitive back and forth nature to the back nine but all in all is strong. In particular the par 3 16th, par 4 3rd and par 5 17th standout to me. - AJ
