A brand to watch: Holderness & Bourne

Something that has long frustrated me is the way that golf shirts fit and look. I am 5’11” and depending on my recent lifestyle choices range from 165-175 lbs. I’m by no means a small human being, but I have found that when I am at a golf course looking to add to my logo bingo collection, shirts from large manufacturers are huge, forcing me to wear a size small. I’ve also found the styles from big box brands make me look like I am going to run a triathlon with their futuristic styling. Is it too much to ask to get a shirt with a modern fit and classic styling?

Luckily, this is changing as upstart New York City brand Holderness & Bourne has hit the scene with their modern fit, performance material and classic minimalist design. Launched in 2015 by reformed Wall Streeters Alex Holderness and John Bourne, who came up with the idea out of their own frustration with golf shirts that didn’t fit right and lacked a simple and classic design. Now, the brand offers much more than just shirts as its line has expanded from shirts to include vests, an assortment of bags and passport covers (I use as a scorecard holder).

I received a couple of shirts and a passport cover from the brand early this summer to try out and they quickly became my favorite golf shirts in the closet. Here are the reasons why I love them:

  • Fit - I don’t have any golf shirts that fit better. I no longer have tan lines at my elbows or problems keeping my shirt tucked in because it’s too short. HB provides the perfect modern fit for golfers.
  • Minimalist design - I have always hated being a walking billboard for a big brand that often put their logo on the forefront of their shirts. HB is the complete opposite with a small discreet logo on the back of the collar.
  • Performance - Don’t let your sweat show. HB’s moisture wicking fabric makes you look cool as a cucumber even on the hottest days.
  • Durability - These shirts have been my favorite for the entire golf season and you can’t tell by looking at them. They have been through the washer countless times and still look as good as the day I got them.

I would highly recommend Holderness & Bourne shirts to anyone who is seeking a classic look with a modern fit. It will be exciting to watch this brand grow over the years and become a known commodity in pro shops across the country.
