Paulie's Picks: Safeway Open

Well, that was a quick offseason!!! The 2016-17 season is set to begin and many unknowns vie to become household names. Here are four guys who might make a splash in week 1:

PGA Tour rookie Trey Mullinax

PGA Tour rookie Trey Mullinax

Trey Mullinax - $6,500

The long-hitting U of Alabama grad has a tendency to make birdies in bunches. He averaged 318 yards off the tee on the Tour last year...AVERAGED!!!!! When he can combine a hot putter with length like that, he can dominate a field. He birdied over 25% of his holes last year! With Draftkings scoring so heavily weighted on birdies, Mullinax is a steal at this price. He reminds me of a young Dustin Johnson. With his low priority rookie ranking, he will need to take advantage of every start he gets. Look for him to get off to a solid start this week.

Jon Rahm - $10,200

Rahm is a star in the making with the ability to perform well under pressure. I expect him to be a staple of the PGA Tour for many years. He has a similar makeup to Mullinax in that he averaged 308 off the tee and birdied over 25% of his holes last year. I expect him to win in the Fall Series and wouldn't be surprised if it is this week.

Hudson Swafford - $7,900

You probably are saying to yourself…why does he keep picking Swafford? It's because he is undervalued almost every week!!! He has finished in the top 20 the last two years of this event. He hasn't missed a cut since April! He hits a lot of greens and picks the course apart to make birdies. That strategy should work well at this venue.

JJ Spaun - $6800

Spaun won’t wow you with any facet of his game, but he was one of the best tee-to-green players on the Tour and ended the season hot. Spaun is a Los Angeles native so I would look for him to play well in his home state of California.
