Cejka this Whee

Patrick Cantlay made a par on the second playoff hole to win the Shriners Hospitals for Children's Open over Whee Kim and Alex Cejka. Cantlay started the day three shots back of Beau Hossler and J.J. Spaun but surged with birdies on holes 11-14. Cantlay held the solo lead with two holes left but finished bogey-bogey to force the playoff with Kim and Cejka. Full scores

A new star

Patrick Cantlay's road to becoming a PGA Tour winner was longer than expected. A back injury and personal tragedy, derailed his career in his early 20's and forced him out of golf for over two years (I wrote about this in February). Since returning in February, Cantlay has moved into the top 50 of the world rankings, qualified for the Tour Championship and has missed 0 cuts in 13 starts. I expect the Shriners to be his first of many wins on the PGA Tour.

Hot start

Chesson Hadley bogeyed the 18th to miss out on the playoff but he did notch another top 5 finish. Hadley has rode the momentum of his strong Web.com Tour season to finishes of t3rd, 2nd, and t4th in his three starts of the 2017-2018 season.

Shriners Notes

Former Texas star Beau Hossler finished t7th, his second consecutive top 10.

Sponsor exemption and Las Vegas shooting survivor A.J. McInerney finished t10th. The finish earned McInerney a spot in next week's Mayakoba which he had to turn down because of 2nd stage of Web.com Tour Q-School.

J.J. Spaun held a share of the lead with two holes remaining and finished double bogey-double bogey to finish t10th.

Back to back

Justin Rose birdied the 18th hole to win the European Tour's Turkish Airlines Open. Rose's Sunday 65 earned him a second consecutive title, after winning last week's WGC HSBC. The win moves Rose into second place in the European Tour's Race to Dubai standings behind Tommy Fleetwood. Finishing runner-up to Rose was Dylan Frittelli and Nicolas Colsaerts. Full scores

The Dark Ages of Golf Course Architecture

I sat down with architects Jay Blasi and Brett Hochstein to talk about the dark ages of golf course architecture. We discussed what happened to cause the era and what to do with the bad courses that it produced. Listen to the podcast on our websiteiTunes or Stitcher.
